Lip anatomy

The lips constitute the external contours of the mouth. Their fundamental function is to help in the articulation of sounds, in the intake of food and as a tactile organ. The lips are made up of two main parts: the outer and rosacea part called the vermilion area and an inner part called the mucous membrane. The vermillion areas are free of salivary glands, which means that without the production of sebum and saliva they are dry and more exposed. The skin of this area is also much thinner than the skin of the rest of the body: consider an average of 16 layers of skin for all areas of the body and one of 2-5 layers for the lips. This causes the numerous blood vessels present in the lips to give them their particular coloring. It should not be forgotten that the skin of the mouth contains a small number of melanocytes and this makes them much more sensitive to sun exposure.

An extremely delicate area whose imperfections can be a real problem since the mouth can be considered the business card that is presented to the interlocutor. The lips, like our whole body, are equipped with a natural hydrolipidic film as protection from external agents. However, this is much more unstable due to the absence of sebaceous glands. Exposing yourself to temperature changes or habits such as frequently licking your lips or not scrubs could compromise the natural protection of the mouth, giving rise to cases of extreme dryness up to the creation of very annoying micro-wounds.

How to take care of it

Deanna’s advice is to apply a moisturizing conditioner at least once a day, perhaps enriched with a sunscreen. Lip balms are one of the best-selling cosmetics, yet they are also one of the most contested. In fact, many subjects have an opposite effect compared to the promised hydration. The rebound effect was the basis on which Altroconsumo carried out a research on the ingredients present in the best-selling lip balms. The study showed that half of the products tested were not suitable for moisturizing the skin of the lips, but for suffocating it. In fact, despite the fact that all the products had the wording “lip balm”, almost all of them saw this ingredient replaced with derivatives from the oil industry. In these cases more than 50% of the product was made up of MOSH (saturated hydrocarbons) and MOAH (aromatic hydrocarbons of mineral oils). Oils in general compromise the hydrolipidic film of the skin and alter its sebum regulation, therefore applying a lip balm that contains derivatives of mineral oils can bring the opposite effect to that desired.

Lip balm, which one to choose?

To find the most suitable lip balm, it must not contain petroleum derivatives. Also considering the area where this cosmetic is placed, with the possibility of ingesting it, it would be better to also avoid endocrine disruptors such as propylparaben and butylparaben. Also beware of the aromas and fragrances used to make the taste and smell of the product more pleasant, these can cause allergens and mucosal irritations.
